Description

VARILITE Meridian Cushion – Lightweight Pressure Relief with Dual-Chamber Pelvic Positioning

Clinically trusted pressure care and postural support for users with complex seating needs

The VARILITE Meridian Cushion is widely recommended by therapists for individuals with motor and neurological dysfunction caused by spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury. Known for its dual-chambered air-foam flotation system, the Meridian delivers advanced pressure redistribution, exceptional comfort, and pelvic stability—all in an ultralight, easy-to-use design.

Therapist-Recommended. User-Approved.

  • Clinicians value the pre-ischial ridge and wedge effect provided by the dual air chambers, which support neutral pelvic alignment and prevent sacral sitting.
  • Users and caregivers appreciate the cushion’s low weight, comfort, and simplicity—with no pumps, kneading, or complex accessories required.

Air-Foam Floatation Technology

The Meridian uses VARILITE’s patented Air-Foam Floatation™ system, combining air immersion with layered foam to ensure pressure relief without sacrificing postural support.

Multi-Zone Foam Composition:

  • Soft foam under the ischial tuberosities (ITs) for sensitive pressure areas
  • Medium foam in the thigh troughs, pelvic bucketing, and pre-ischial bar
  • Firm foam around the perimeter and medial thigh separator for added structure

The foam is bonded to a coated, air-holding fabric, and air is released through a two-way valve to immerse the user in the foam—allowing the cushion to conform to the body and evenly distribute weight.

Independent testing confirms VARILITE Air-Foam Floatation is the #1 technology for impact and vibration dampening (RESNA, 2000).

Dual-Chamber Design for Optimized Positioning

The dual air chambers (rear and front) allow independent adjustment of the pelvis and thighs, even while the user is seated.

  • The rear chamber maximizes pelvic immersion, promoting better pressure redistribution.
  • The front chamber loads the thighs, relieving pressure on the ITs.
  • Together, they form a pre-ischial ridge that prevents sliding forward, reduces posterior pelvic tilt, and enhances postural control.
  • Releasing more air from the pelvic chamber than the thigh chamber creates a “dump” or “squeeze” effect that helps “hold” the client in place—ideal for users with extensor tone or thrusting tendencies.
  • For added customisation, the Meridian can be paired with the VARILITE Wave positioning base to enhance pelvic and lower extremity alignment.

Advanced Positioning Support

Positioning supports are built into the Meridian’s foam structure to assist users with reduced sitting balance or those who frequently transfer.

  • Medial and lateral thigh supports minimize internal and external leg rotation
  • Pelvic bucketing and pre-ischial ridge maintain midline pelvic position
  • Thigh troughs encourage neutral femoral alignment
  • Multi-stiffness foam provides structured support while allowing immersion

Breathable Four-Way Stretch Fabric

The Meridian’s foam is bonded to a puncture- and water-resistant four-way-stretch knit fabric, which allows maximum conformity and immersion.

  • Available with either a breathable mesh or incontinence cover
  • Includes reticulated foam lining for improved airflow and pressure relief
  • Non-slip base with hook-and-loop attachment ensures cushion stability
  • Covers meet ISO 7176-16 ignition resistance standards and are machine washable

Two-Way Air Valve for Manual Adjustment

The Meridian uses a two-valve system to adjust air volume in each chamber.

  • While seated on a fully inflated cushion, the user opens the right valve to release air from the pelvic chamber until approximately 13mm (½ inch) of foam remains under the ITs
  • Opening the left valve releases air from the thigh chamber, adjusting the wedge effect and load distribution
  • This allows personalized immersion and effective pressure management with minimal effort

Optional Wedge Accessory

A modular closed-cell foam wedge is available with every Meridian cushion:

  • Reduces seat-to-back angle, shifting pressure toward the posterior thighs
  • Helps offload pressure from the buttocks
  • The 2” (5 cm) wedge can be trimmed for a custom fit, ensuring comfort and functional alignment
